Finding Game Testing Jobs
What are game testing jobs? Simply put, game testing jobs are jobs where you are paid to play video games!
Seriously! In some ways, it’s not quite as easy as it sounds. One of the difficult parts of becoming a game tester is
finding the position in the first place. There are a number of ways to go about securing your first job, and you’ll find
that patience, time and tenacity are all required in order to land that first all-important job.
Begin at the Beginning
The first thing that you should do is you want to become a video game tester is to play video games! In all
seriousness, you can’t become a great video game tester if you can’t play video games very well. If you’re a person
who can beat the Legend of Zelda games in less than a day, you might do well as a video game tester. If it takes
you a year to finish the game, and you get stuck on the puzzles constantly, you probably aren’t the type of person
would do well testing video games.
Speed isn’t the only thing you have to be good at; variety is also important. If you play just one type of game, such
as sporting games or horror games, you will have a much slimmer chance of getting a job with a good video game
company. They want people who are able to switch from playing a reality simulation video game to a fantasy role
playing game seamlessly.
Patience and Tenacity
If you meet both of the requirements above, your next challenge is to find a video game company that might hire
you. This is often the most difficult part, because there are always so many people believing that they have what it
takes to test video games. So how do you find a company to hire you? You start for free.
No company is going to pay you to for game testing jobs with no experience, and the only way to get experience is
to become a tester for free. Contact a number of different video game companies and explain that you would like to
get experience testing video games so that you can make it your career. Tell them that you are beginning your
career by testing games for free on the side. If you’re friendly and sincere enough, the company will either send you
a game, or keep you on their list of potential testers.
That All Important Job
After you’ve tested games for awhile for free, it’s time to get paid. Once you have some experience under your belt,
and the video game company has assured you that they are happy with your work, contact them and explain that
you would like to be put on the payroll. They may balk at first, but hopefully your work will stand for itself. If the
company is unable to pay you, shop around! There are plenty of companies out there offering game testing jobs!
