Are There Really Video Game Tester Careers?

Some people, particularly those who do not play video games very often, wonder if there really are people who have
video game tester careers. They have a hard time believing that a company would pay people money just to play
games. The easy answer is that yes, there are people who make a career out of playing video games. The answer,
however, deserves a little bit of explaining.

Why do video game makers need people to test their product for them? Why can’t the programmers play the
games? Just because someone is a computer programmer does not mean that they enjoy playing video games. A
lot of programmers, in fact, truly don’t like to play video games. They enjoy the challenge of making a new game,
but for some of them, part of the mystery and excitement is gone. This is why video game companies need eager
people to test the systems for them, in order to make sure that they are working and that the game play is good.

Why have the product tested so thoroughly? Imagine that you were designing and trying to sell a game that retails
for fifty dollars. People are extremely anxious to get their hands on this product over the holidays, which is when you
launch the game. You sell thousands of copies of this product and suddenly start getting phone calls that the game
has a major glitch in it that wasn’t caught. Now, can you imagine how much money you will have to shell out for
refunds? Video game companies make millions, and they want to make sure that they keep the money they make. In
order to make sure that the consumers are kept happy, they pay out money to testers, who do an excellent job
catching glitches and problems in the games they check.

Can You Make A Living?

Some wonder if it’s possible to make a living off of video game tester careers. Yes, actually, it’s very possible! Some
start by working for free, which is an excellent way to break into the industry. Once they have worked for a company
for a good length of time, it’s entirely possible to be promoted to a paying position. Many move to the city where the
company is located go to work just like most people do. The only difference is that they spend hours in front of a
game rather than in front of paperwork. Video game testers can make anywhere from $8 dollars an hour and on up.

The next time you sit down to play your favorite video game, give a small thought to those who spend their time
making sure that your game works perfectly. They’re the ones that make sure that the system works exactly was you
want it to. If it wasn’t for those who have video game tester careers, none of us would be able to relieve our stress
by playing video games!
